INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — National Dog Walker Appreciation Day is being celebrated on Sept. 8, highlighting the growing importance of professional dog walkers in today’s busy society.

Tom Dock from Noah’s Animal Hospital discussed the significance of dog walking as a profession, especially for those who are unable to walk their dogs due to time constraints or physical limitations. With the rise of apps like Rover, dog walking has become a viable career option, providing essential services to pet owners.

“We have a saying, a tired dog is a good dog,” Tom Dock said, emphasizing the health benefits of regular walks for dogs. “Just giving them that emotional balance, that mental, you know, getting that mental energy out where they can go sniff and see things and not be in that same four walls all day.”

Dog walking is not only beneficial for the pets but also for the owners. Regular walks can improve the health of both dogs and their human companions, as noted by Tom Dock. “If we can get out and walk with our dog 20 minutes a day, twice a day, we’re going to be much healthier,” he said.

The profession of dog walking has evolved significantly, with many people relying on services facilitated by apps. These platforms often provide guarantees, insurance policies, and background checks to ensure safety and reliability. Dock mentioned finding 18 dog walkers within a two-mile radius of his home, with rates ranging from $16 to $20 per walk. Choosing the right dog walker involves asking important questions about their experience, familiarity with specific breeds, and availability.

Dock highlighted the importance of ensuring that the walker can handle the specific needs of different dogs, from energetic breeds like Australian Shepherds to larger dogs like his own. Despite the convenience of hiring a dog walker, there is sometimes a stigma attached to not walking one’s own dog. Dock pointed out that this perception might prevent some from seeking help, even when it’s needed. He suggested that sharing information about available services can help those who may not be aware of their options, such as elderly pet owners.

As National Dog Walker Appreciation Day approaches, it’s a reminder of the valuable role dog walkers play in maintaining the well-being of pets and their owners. By providing a necessary service, they help ensure dogs receive the exercise and stimulation they need, contributing to healthier and happier lives for all involved.
