Symptoms of Salmonella and Listeria Infection

Listeria is a bacteria found in water, soil and animal feces, and can contaminate different types of food products, even if refrigerated.

Salmonella is a bacterial food-borne illness that can cause a fever and various gastrointestinal symptoms.

Symptoms of listeria and salmonella infection in healthy people include:

  • Diarrhea or bloody diarrhea

In rare instances, salmonella and listeria can cause more serious illnesses including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Older people, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems are more susceptible to infection.

Anyone experiencing these symptoms after handling the products should contact their doctor or medical provider.

The FDA reports that pets with salmonella or listeria may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets show milder symptoms such as little appetite, fever, and abdominal pain. Infected pets can be carriers and contagious to other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product, contact your veterinarian immediately.
