A popular nationwide pet food company is recalling several of its raw pet food products after discovering it could be contaminated with salmonella and listeria.
According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Viva Raw’s recalled products were distributed between July 2 and Aug. 21 directly to customers across the U.S. and to select retailers in New York, Illinois, South Carolina, Florida, Kansas, California and Arizona.
The products were distributed as frozen 1-pound bricks in clear vacuum packaging.
The recall includes the following products:
- Viva Ground Beef for Dogs
- Viva Beef & Turkey for Puppies
- Viva Ground Chicken for Dogs
- Viva Chunked Chicken for Dogs
- Viva Chicken for Cats
- Viva Pure Chicken
These products may be contaminated with salmonella and listeria, which can affect animals eating the products and the humans handling the pet food, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after touching the product, the FDA explained.
Individuals infected with these bacteria should monitor themselves for symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever.
Rarely, salmonella and listeria can result in more serious ailments such as arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation and urinary tract symptoms, the administration added.
Pregnant women are especially susceptible to listeria infection, which can result in miscarriage. Children, older people and those with weakened immune systems are more vulnerable to infection.
Pets infected with salmonella or listeria may experience symptoms such as lethargy, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting.
Some pets could also have decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain.
The statement says, “If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.”
No illnesses in dogs, cats or humans related to these recalled pet foods have been reported.
However, customers are urged to throw out the food in a way that children, pets, and wildlife cannot access it. Consumers should also not sell or donate the product.
Pet owners should wash and sanitize pet food bowls, cups and storage containers.
