Understanding your dog’s language is the key to transforming your relationship with your animal companion using understanding and empathy.
Los Angeles, California, July 18th, 2024 – Maryam Kamali is a renowned dog trainer who founded Pawsitive Manners and was called in to consult on a very tricky case. Her client? UnchainedTV President Jane Velez-Mitchell who had recently adopted two very frisky, young dogs and found herself unable to leave the house because the dogs would start barking incessantly. “I actually hire babysitters when I go out, and that gets expensive,” said Velez-Mitchell. “I have a social life, so I want to be able to leave them alone,” she added. Kamali’s dog training philosophy stresses compassion and patience over domination and scolding. The key, says Kamali, is understanding your dog’s language. Velez-Mitchell was up for the challenge. Watch this video and find out how you can learn your dog’s language.
The Arrival of Sunday and Wednesday
First, Kamali wanted to learn all about her two new students. Sunday, a tomboy who loves to run off-leash and fetch, came into Velez-Mitchell’s life on a rainy Sunday, hence her name. By contrast, Wednesday, who joined the family on a Wednesday, is a party girl, always eager for treats and attention.
Understanding and Communication
Kamali’s approach is all about seeing the world from a dog’s perspective. “Observe your dogs carefully and start learning their language,” she advises. By studying dog body language and cognition through books like “Doggie Language” by Lili Chin and “The Secret Language of Dogs” by Victoria Stilwell, dog owners can better understand their pets.
“They’ve got to learn some rules,” Kamali states, highlighting the need for some serious instruction. The goal? Get Sunday and Wednesday to “…stop barking in the home and at other dogs and people.” Kamali’s approach is not about dominance but about building a harmonious relationship with one’s dogs based on mutual understanding and respect.
Positive Reinforcement and Patience
Kamali’s philosophy revolves around positive reinforcement. “Imagine being able to tell your dog to come back to you, and the dog comes,” she explains. “Imagine the dog tells you, ‘No, mama, I don’t like that,’ and you can read that too.”
Her method involves teaching dogs specific cues that translate into life skills. For instance, Kamali describes how she will put away all dog treats when the dogs are overexcited and need to reset, fostering a sense of calm and obedience without arousing a dog’s fear of punishment.
The Barking Issue
One common issue Kamali addresses is barking. Velez-Mitchell’s dogs seem to bark more at men. “That tells us they are not comfortable with men,” says Kamali. Her solution? Gradual introduction and positive experiences. “Saying hello to men means you get tasty treats, love, and attention from your mom.”
Another challenge is the resistance to walking and aggressive behavior toward other dogs. Kamali suggests using cues and skills to redirect their attention, making them comfortable and less stressed. “Dogs learn by association,” she emphasizes. “If they associate those uncomfortable situations with positive experiences, we change their emotional response.”
Her final advice is profound and simple: be patient and compassionate. “There are no quick fixes to sophisticated issues,” she says. “Do take measures to understand them better, and be patient with them and yourself.”
Maryam Kamali’s insights into dog training offer a refreshing perspective that goes beyond obedience. Her emphasis on empathy and understanding paves the way for a deeper, more meaningful relationship with our furry friends. By learning their language, we can transform our lives and theirs, fostering a bond built on trust and mutual respect.
