Dog Training Licensing Board Pushed in New Jersey Legislation

Dog Training Licensing Board Pushed in New Jersey Legislation

On Monday, February 10, at 10:30 am in Committee Room 1, 1st floor of the State House Annex, the New Jersey Senate Economic Growth Committee  is scheduled to hear S3814, a bill to establish a Dog Training Licensing Board to provide oversight on dog trainers.

Animal welfare is of the utmost importance to the Sportsmen’s Alliance as we do not condone the mistreatment of animals. New Jersey also already has very comprehensive animal cruelty laws on the books. With that being said, Senate Bill 3814 is redundant and is only more bureaucrat red tape for reputable dog trainers that has zero chance of benefitting animal welfare.

Use the Take Action button to email the committee and urge them to vote “No” on S3814. Reputable dog trainers already consider current animal welfare laws in their training and do not need the added oversight from government.

S3814 establishes the Dog Training Licensing Board and provides authorization for the board to, among other items: 1) develop educational and experiential requirements for licensure as a dog trainer; and 2) adopt rules and regulations regarding dog training. The bill will also establish an evidence-based, humane training code of practice that aligns with current welfare principles and incorporates scientifically endorsed methods that preclude the use of aversive training methods.

Extremists will say S3814 is needed to ensure a standard of safe training for dogs and provide for enforcement of those standards. That is exactly what the current animal cruelty laws do. They ensure the safety of not just dogs, but all animals.

Don’t forget to share this alert with your family, friends, fellow sportsmen and dog owners. Ask them to also Take Action contacting the committee urging them to vote “No” on S3814.
