Alabama dog trainer convicted of animal cruelty following puppy’s death

A Chilton County dog trainer will spend the next three months in jail after being found guilty on an animal cruelty charge.During a Thursday court appearance, Cupid Seymour was sentenced to a year in jail, but will only spend 180 days of that behind bars. The remainder of his sentence is suspended for two years, during which he will be under unsupervised probation.Additionally, Seymour must pay $3,500 in restitution, a $1,000 fine and court costs.Seymour was arrested last November after Chloe, a 4-month-old Chesapeake Bay Retriever, died at his training facility in Verbena, Cupid’s Dog House. Chloe’s owner, Karen Black, said when the trainer called her on Oct. 19, she knew something was wrong.“He said that he had some bad news that Chloe had passed,” Black said. “And my daughter and my husband were right there. He believes the young pup contracted an illness from another dog at the facility.“Our condolences go out to the family and all pet owners that are concerned. We can assure you that no dog while here is starved or deprived of food,” Seymour said.Seymour sent Black several videos of Chloe being trained, which he said showed the pup healthy and happy.“The dog didn’t lose any weight while it was here. She was plump and healthy in all of the videos,” Seymour said.Black decided to press charges and Seymour was arrested and charged with animal cruelty soon after.“I don’t want any other family to feel what our family has felt,” Black said. “I don’t want any other dog to feel what our dog felt.
