Longview animal shelter offers free adoptions with Pup-Peroni donation for ‘Clear the Shelter’ event

LONGVIEW, Texas (KLTV) – Longview Animal Care and Adoption Center is holding an event this Saturday called “Clear the Shelter” and that’s exactly what it’s about. And all fees will be waived if you bring a certain type of dog treat which is used in an enrichment program that helps keep the dogs calm.

Longview Animal Care and Adoption Center Outreach Coordinator Brittany Mills says the Clear the Shelter event is one of the biggest adoption days of the year for the Longview shelter. She says they do it in mid-August since:

“Around this time of year, we kind of see taper off and slow down a little bit. And a big reason for that in School. Everyone’s getting back into, whether it’s school, teaching, getting into the flow of a routine so everyone’s kind of got their focus on other things,” Mills said.

She says although August is clear the shelter month:

“We still like to focus on having one full event. Having a whole party and celebration here at the shelter,” Mills said.

And they’ll waive the adoption fees for a fifty-ounce bag of Pup-Peroni. But why is that so high demand?

“We do a lot of enrichment here. We do treat scatters in the morning, where we take these treats, we break them up into pieces. And by putting them in their kennels, by kind of tossing them, it gives animals something to do when they enter our kennels,” Mills said.

The treats are easy to break up unlike Milk Bones, which is about the only treat they have right now. Those chunks are too big for smaller dogs. Treats are hidden and make for happier dogs when they return to the kennels, according to Shelter Director Jenna George.

“It’s reinforcement for them when they’re in kennel. We give them something to look forward to. It’s helping to lower stress,” George said.

She says dogs are much calmer after finding hidden treats. Right now, they are out of the treat.

“Support them. Donate a fifty-ounce bag of Pup-Peroni and we will waive your adoption fee,” Mills said.

So that’s a new best friend for the price of a bag of doggie snacks.

Clear the Shelter Day is from noon to 5 P.M. Saturday at the Longview Animal Care and Adoption Center. They will have a food truck on sight and other people treats. And if you plan on adopting, make sure to bring a fifty-ounce bag of Pup-Peroni. There is a screening process for pet adoptions.

“Clear the Shelter” takes place at the Longview Animal Care and Adoption Center Saturday from noon to 5 p.m.
