Wisconsin pet food recalled for possible salmonella

Foodynamics, a pet food company based in Wales, Wisconsin, is voluntarily recalling some of its products due to possible salmonella contamination.

According to an alert posted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the recalled products are freeze-dried pet treats under the brands Raw Dog Barkery, BellePepper Cats, Kanu Pets, and What’s In the Bowl.

Eight total packages reached consumers, and the company has contacted those consumers, according to the FDA announcement. As of Oct. 9, there were no reported adverse effects in pets or humans.

The recalled products were shipped from Wisconsin to retailers in Wisconsin, New York, and Florida.

Two packages of recalled Raw Dog Barkery were packaged in 16 oz. packages with the “Use By” date 030527. They were distributed to SimplyDried Treats and Magpies Gourmet Dog Treats in Wisconsin.

Three packages of recalled What’s In the Bowl products were sold by the retailer in Delafield and include two 3 oz. and one 16 oz. packages with the “Use By” date 030527.

According to the announcement, two of the three packages have been returned by customers.

Two packages of BellePepper Cats being recalled were sold by the retailer in New York in 3 oz. packaged plastic bags labeled “Freeze Dried Chicken Heart Slices” with a “Use By” sticker listing 031627. Recalled products from Use By 121426 and 011526 may have also been affected.

One package of recalled Kanu Pets products were sold in Florida in a 3 oz. packaged plastic bag labeled “Freeze Dried Chicken Heart Raw treats” and had a Use By label of 031627.

According to the announcement, salmonella can affect the animals eating the products and possibly humans handling the products.

Healthy people infected with salmonella may experience symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Salmonella rarely results in more serious ailments, which can include arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms.

Infected pets may experience lethargy, diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting.
