Pet food recalled over Salmonella, Listeria contamination

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Viva Raw LLC of Charlotte is recalling two lots of dog and cat food due to contamination with Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

The recall affects products sent directly to consumers nationwide as well as select retailers in New York, Illinois, South Carolina, Florida, Kansas, California and Arizona. The product is distributed as frozen one-pound bricks in clear vacuum packaging with lot number printed atop the packaging.

The recall covers:

• Lot 21495 – Viva Ground Beef for Dogs; Viva Beef & Turkey for Puppies.

• Lot 21975 – Viva Ground Chicken for Dogs; Viva Chunked Chicken for Dogs; Viva Chicken for Cats; Viva Pure Chicken.

They were distributed between July 2 and Aug. 21.

Salmonella and Listeria can affect animals eating the products, and humans who handle contaminated pet products are at risk.

Salmonella or Listeria can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Pregnant women are especially susceptible to Listeria infection, which can result in miscarriage. The young, the elderly and people with weak immune systems are more vulnerable to infection. In rare cases, it can cause more serious ailments.

Some pets with Salmonella or Listeria infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect animals or humans.

Those who have products from the recalled lots should do the following:

• Contact Viva Raw at info@vivarawpets.com for a refund.

• Dispose of the food in a way that children, pets and wildlife cannot access.

• Do not sell or donate the products.

• Wash and sanitize pet-food bowls, cups and storage containers.

• Always wash and sanitize your hands after handling recalled food or any utensils that come in contact with recalled food.
