According to the class action lawsuit, the pet food was contaminated with salmonella, a dangerous bacteria that can cause severe illness and even death.

The lawsuit alleges Mid America Pet Food knew or should have known about the contamination but failed to warn consumers.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention completed a recall investigation into Mid America Pet Food products in 2024.

While the company has not admitted wrongdoing, it agreed to pay $5.5 million to settle the claims.

Under the settlement terms, eligible class members can receive compensation for both pet injuries and food purchases.

Pet owners who submit documented injury claims can receive payments of up to $100,000.

Documented claims must be supported by evidence such as receipts, invoices, veterinary records or similar documentation.

Undocumented injury claims are capped at $50 for pets that became ill but survived and $100 for pets that died.

Consumers may also receive refunds for pet food purchases made during the covered period.

Documented food purchase claims will be paid at 100 per cent of the approved loss amount.

Undocumented food purchase claims are capped at $40, with a maximum of two bags per claim.

If money remains in the settlement fund after valid claims are paid, payouts could increase proportionally for class members.

The deadline to exclude yourself from or object to the settlement is Jan. 6, 2026.

A final approval hearing is scheduled for Feb. 6, 2026.

To receive any payment, class members must submit a valid claim form by Feb. 5, 2026.
