BVMC emphasizes whole-family involvement in puppy training sessions

Kearney, NE:

There is a lot to learning when bringing home that adorable bundle of joy! The same is true when welcoming a new addition in the way of a 4-legged friend to the family! Dr. Brandon Beebout of the Beebout Veterinary Medical Center says that is where puppy training classes are a valuable resource.

“When we’re talking about puppy training classes, we want these guys to be present, whether you’re two, or whether you’re 10 or 15, you’re gonna learn so much in puppy class,” says Dr. Beebout. “Kati (Mannel) does a great job,” he added. Puppy training classes gets your puppy to see the other behaviors of the adults and other family members and how gentle they are with everybody.

Dr. Pao Beebout says she does encourage kids to come to puppy kindergarten. “Puppy kindergarten is pretty relaxed and it’s mostly for socialization for the puppy, we do encourage the kids to come and the parents, for the whole family to come, because that’s how we want dogs to get used to being around other people,” says Dr. Beebout. The class isn’t just for your puppy to be around other dogs and get along with other dogs. She says those other dogs come with owners and families, and BVMC wants them to be comfortable around strangers. That’s partly why they encourage it have a more open space concept, so everyone can just have a little bit more wiggle room and not too many confrontations.

Puppy training classes teach families how to feed their pets. Dr. Brandon says they talk about feeding all the time. It’s the respect of where the food bowls are and not be reaching our hand in there. Even the best dog is going to say, “don’t take my food away”, especially the food motivated ones. That’s something that’s occurs often in the Beebout house. “We talk about it a lot. We’ll continue to talk about it a lot and an older couple that has a dog that never sees any kids except for twice a year, three times a year when the grandkids come, that’s why it’s important for them to come and at least see that, get exposed to that and then they’re kind of ready and socialized,” says Dr. Beebout

Classes are Mondays at 6:00pm and are free. The typical class is around 45 minutes long, and if it’s nice, you’ll go outside. There are about 7 or 8 topics covered. It’s a revolving class . You may come in the first time and get discouraged. Don’t. There’s somebody that’s been there six weeks in a row, and that dog, you can tell “this dog has been here six weeks”, and you can tell “that dog’s hiding underneath that chair, it’s his first week”. Second week he’ll be out in the middle playing king of the mountain.

The socialization is super key because dogs and dog owners are more out in public every day now as we’ve talked about with people, and we’ve done a few shows on that. And so, I mean, it’s just important to get that socialization down because then you’re mostly worried just about the physical health at that point.
